Collective action vital to halt AWD outbreak, says Ministry
Addis Ababa June 23/2016 The Ministry of Health (MoH) has called for a joint action to hold back Acute Watery Diarrhea (AWD) outbreak in Addis Ababa.
The capital is now experiencing AWD outbreak which was first reported on June 8, 2016 when two persons contracted the diseases.
A joint action by partners and the mass media will contribute a lot in impeding the spread of the disease, according to the ministry.
The latest AWD outbreak is attributed to the El-Nino weather phenomenon.
Public Relation Director for MoH Ahmed Emano said the areas affected by the El-Nino induced drought were expected to experience heat waves and hygiene related diseases.
Speaking during AWD related awareness raising education program organized for journalists here today, Ahmed said command posts have been formed at all levels to control the outbreak.
The city has readied 24 health institutions in all sub-cities to respond to the outbreak.
Water and sewerage, food and medicine bureaus of the city have also joined the campaign against the disease, according to Ahmed.
The public is advised to rush to nearby health centers in case of the emergence of symptoms of the disease.
Addis Ababa was hit by AWD outbreak back in 2009, the director recalled.
Oromia, Somali, and the Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’s regions were also hit by the AWD outbreak this year.
Dehydration, fever, hematochezia, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain are among the symptoms of AWD.
