Commission says over 451,000 metric tons of grain in stock
Addis Ababa June 18/2016 The National Disaster Risk Management Commission (NDRMC) has confirmed a stockpile of more than 451 thousand metric tons of grain for drought victims.
The Adama central grain-store alone has close to a million quintals of grain, of which some 45 thousand metric tons is being distributed.
The grain from the Adama stock was destined to beneficiaries in Oromia, Amhara, Afar, Benishangul-Gumuz, Gambella and the Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’s states.
Grain, edible oil and nutritious food were among those stockpiled and distributed, according to Alemayehu Abebe, Logistics Corporation Coordinator of the Adama grain store.
Besides imported grains and nutritious food items, more than 30 domestic cooperative unions are supplying the Adama store with wheat, corn and other grains, Alemayehu said.
“Except for the burden created by the incoming mass of grain on the logistics, other activities are being expedited,” the coordinator said.
The Ethiopian government has imported 222 thousand metric tons of grain in the first phase, revealed Mitiku Kassa NDRMC Commissioner.
According to the Commissioner, some 405 thousand tons of grain imported in the second phase has already been distributed among beneficiaries.
Purchase of over 499 thousand metric tons of wheat is in progress to ensure the continued supply of food to drought victims throughout the country.
So far, more than 627 thousand metric tons of food has been disbursed among the beneficiaries.
The commission also purchased more than 100 thousand metric tons of wheat from local producers.
According to reports, the Strategic Food Reserve Agency is working to take food stockpile to 1.5 million metric tons.
